As a survey by the German Press Agency showed on Tuesday, the capacity limits have even been reached in some cases. This applies to regions in Belgium, Great Britain and the Czech Republic, among others.

According to trade unionists, dozens of doctors and nurses are on duty in the completely overloaded clinics in the Belgian province of Liège, despite the corona infection.

“We have to choose between a bad and a very bad solution,” said Philippe Devos from the Association of Medical Unions of the German Press Agency. The very bad solution is not to treat patients at all. According to the EU epidemic authority ECDC, Belgium is the country with the most corona infections within 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants – this value was 1390.9. Patients were also transferred to Aachen across the German border.

The situation in Great Britain is also very tense. According to media reports, the capacity of the first clinics in the Greater Manchester area is exhausted. The problem: The national health service NHS is chronically underfunded. Even with a flu outbreak in winter, many clinics cannot cope with the onslaught of patients.

Thousands of operations have already been canceled, and the government has built several makeshift clinics. Many doctors and nurses died during the first wave of the outbreak. In the absence of adequate protective clothing and masks, some even tried to arm themselves against the virus with garbage bags. There is still a lack of tests today. According to the statistics authority, there are over 61,000 death certificates on which a corona infection is noted.

The Czech Republic has decided to take drastic measures such as a night curfew to prevent the hospitals from becoming overburdened within two weeks. The Ministry of Health ordered that planned operations be postponed in all clinics. Of the total of almost 4,000 intensive care beds, only around 1,100 are available for Covid sufferers and all other patients. The lack of staff is a major concern. According to the Medical Association, more than 13,000 employees in the healthcare sector have infected themselves with Corona. Most keep working if they don’t show symptoms.

In Russia, the capital Moscow is particularly affected, where temporary hospitals have also been built. According to official figures from Tuesday, more than 1200 Covid 19 sufferers were brought to clinics there within one day. There are media reports from the regions that many hospitals are already overloaded, patients are being treated in the corridors and doctors are missing.

The outlook for small countries like Lithuania and Latvia is bleak. “If it goes on like this, the health system, one of the weakest in Europe, could collapse in a month,” said Liene Cipule, head of the emergency services, in the Latvian parliament.

In Hungary and the Balkans, too, experts worry because the health system is underfunded in many places. In Romania, doctors have to decide in some places who can still get a place in the intensive care unit – the younger ones have priority.

In France, the situation is particularly tense in Paris and in the south-east of the country. On Monday there were around 2,770 seriously ill people in intensive care units – that’s about half of the total capacity. Many regions in Spain are also coming under pressure. In Madrid and Aragón, over 40 percent of the intensive care beds are already occupied by Covid-19 patients. In Italy, the authorities have already warned of a “high probability” that capacities in various regions will soon no longer be sufficient.

In Germany there is no shortage of intensive care beds, but there is a shortage of nursing staff. That said the President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine, Uwe Janssens, the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday).123helpme.me There is now “sufficient capacity for free intensive care beds and ventilators”. But that alone does not help “if we do not have staff to care for the patients”. Herein lies “the much bigger problem”. Roughly estimated, there was a lack of 3,500 to 4,000 specialists for intensive care nationwide, said Janssens.

According to a media report, the Swiss government’s Covid Taskforce estimates that the intensive care beds will be fully occupied in mid-November if the number of infections continues to increase. In Austria there is still space in the intensive care units: According to the health authority Ages, around 840 of the around 2500 intensive care beds are available for corona patients, of which 203 were occupied on Tuesday.

The Dutch hospitals can hardly withstand the pressure of the increasing number of patients. Many operations have been canceled. Around every second bed in intensive care units is now occupied by a Covid 19 patient. The first two patients have already been flown to Münster. More are to follow.

The situation is much more relaxed in the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. A senior doctor said that there was still plenty of space in Danish hospitals.

More than 40 million infections have been detected worldwide since the pandemic began. More than a million people have died from Covid-19 disease.

The WHO chief expressed understanding that many people felt “pandemic fatigue”. The psychological and physical stress of working from home and the distance to friends and family are high. Still, people shouldn’t give up. Above all, however, the health systems and the people who work for them must be protected. The WHO called on people to take every precaution to avoid infection. This is the only way to avoid further lockdowns.

In Pennsylvania, postal ballot papers should still be valid if they arrive up to three days later. It’s even nine days in North Carolina. The Supreme Court now put this decision in effect. President Donald Trump and Republicans want only ballots delivered by November 3rd to be counted.

In view of the corona pandemic, significantly more Americans vote by letter than usual. At the same time, it is unclear how long the letters could take after austerity measures at the US Post. There are already disputes in several states, further proceedings could follow. It is likely that the Supreme Court will have the final say.

In North Carolina, the electoral authority had extended the deadline for the arrival of the ballot papers from three to nine days. An appeals court declared that to be admissible. The Supreme Court now voted for this decision with a majority of five to three votes.

In the Pennsylvania case, the Supreme Court initially only denied a motion by the Republicans to expedite their lawsuit against the three-day deadline. However, this means it remains in force for the time being. However, three conservative judges expressly kept it open to take up the case again after the election.

Pennsylvania and North Carolina are among the contested states that could make the choice. In Pennsylvania it is about 20 electorates, in North Carolina it is 15. To win the presidential election you have to get 270 voters.

The Supreme Court rulings on cases involve complex considerations of whether state or local and federal courts can rule on election issues.

According to polls, the Democrats who support Trump’s challenger Joe Biden are more likely than Republicans to vote by mail. At the same time, many states offer the opportunity to vote in a polling station before November 3rd or to drop your ballot papers in collection boxes.

The newly appointed judge Amy Coney Barrett stayed out of both decisions. You did not have enough time to familiarize yourself with the documents, said a spokeswoman for the Supreme Court of the “New York Times” on Wednesday. Barrett had only been sworn in on Tuesday. The Democrats, who failed to resist their appeal, generally demand that they not take part in decisions on the upcoming presidential election.

President Donald Trump had particularly emphasized that he wanted to occupy the vacant seat at the Supreme Court, especially with a view to possible proceedings around the vote count before the election date on November 3rd. The conservative majority in the Supreme Court grew with Barrett to six of the nine seats.

The highest value so far with 3,124 deaths was recorded on Wednesday. The number of new infections has also reached a new high: 231,775 new cases were reported within one day. The previous highest value was registered on December 4th at 227,828.

In total, more than 15.8 million people have been infected with the corona virus in the country with around 330 million inhabitants. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 295,522 people have died from the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen. In absolute numbers that is more than in any other country in the world.

The Johns Hopkins website is updated regularly and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures from the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, the numbers – including those of new infections within 24 hours, but also those of dead – are updated retrospectively.

The ruling party suffered a defeat in the parliamentary elections in Lithuania. The conservatives with their non-party leading candidate will be the winners – and now they want a change of power.

Lithuania is facing a change of power. In the second round of the parliamentary elections, the opposition Patriotic Union became the strongest political force. The conservative party is expected to hold 50 of the 141 seats in parliament after the second round of elections. This was announced by the electoral commission in Vilnius on Monday night after nearly all electoral districts had been counted.

The second strongest force in the Baltic EU and NATO country, with 32 seats, will be the ruling Union of Farmers and Greens. Its three previous coalition partners also lost significantly – two of them only got 3 seats each. After the results were announced, farmer boss Ramunas Karbauskis admitted the defeat of his center party and congratulated the conservatives.

Ex-finance minister is the top candidate

Fatherland Union top candidate Ingrida Simonyte made the right to form a government coalition on election night. The non-party ex-finance minister announced talks with the two liberal parties: the Liberal Movement (13 seats) and the newly founded Freedom Party (11 seats).

In a joint statement after a meeting, the heads of the three parties announced their intention to form a center-right government led by the 45-year-old Simonyte. “We are determined to pool our efforts to restore trust between the state and the people,” it said.

First round of voting indicated success for the Conservatives

The three-party coalition would only achieve a slim majority in parliament, in which the Social Democrats (13 seats) and the populist Labor Party (10 seats) are also represented. In addition, several smaller parties and independent candidates made it into the Seimas parliament. The turnout was 39.7 percent.

Even after the first ballot two weeks ago, the Conservatives were considered likely to be successful. At that time, 70 seats were assigned according to proportional representation and three direct seats, the remaining 68 seats were decided in runoff elections on Sunday.

Strict corona protective measures were applied in the election. In the days leading up to the vote and on election day, the number of new infections in Lithuania reached a record level.
